| History of St. Anthony | |||||
| It all began in the September of 1906 when Rev. M. Madert came to Follansbee. Mass was first said in Mahan's Hall, later in a private home on Allegheny Street and from 1909 to 1910 in Exner's Hall. After a time Fr. Madert bought some property on Jefferson Street and succeeded in getting a little Church completed in 1911. Bishop Donohue blessed the Church on May 7, 1911. Rev. J.J. Kennedy was given charge of Follansbee in the year of 1912. The winter of 1912 Follansbee became a mission of Wellsburg with the Very Rev. Leopold Hermans V.F. who attended it until June 1917. Rev. Henry Parascandola was then assigned it's first resident pastor. He acquired properties on the corner of Jefferson and Raymond streets. Rev. James Rogers was assigned as pastor in 1919. In 1927 a school building was built. This building was used for a church until 1938. In May, 1938 Rev. Martin J. Egan took charge of St. Anthony Parish. St. Anthony School began in September 1938 with three Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus. On December 8, 1940 a drive was organized to collect funds for the new Church. On Labor Day, September 1941, His Excellency, the Most Rev. John J. Swint, D.D. laid the cornerstone of St. Anthony's Church. The Church was dedicated in 1942 and now you know the rest of the story..... |
